Dramatic changes occur in all of our lives as we make the journey from child to adult. Knowledge is gained while innocence is lost. The story of Adam and Eve becomes relevant as we all eat from the tree of knowledge sacrificing the paradise of ignorance. My work reclaims some of this lost naivety by reevaluating complex adult situations through the arena of childhood consciousness. These works are microcosms of adulthood filtered through the juvenile world of playpens and sandboxes. Images borrowed from toy chests, cartoons, traveling circuses, and playgrounds are used to translate our sensitivities, bigotries, dispositions, and shortcomings into more simplistic terms revealing the ridiculous nature of our humanity. These metaphors are reminiscent of the folklore, fairytales, and front porch fables I recall from my own childhood. My work incorporates societal issues of class, anxiety, love, expectations, acceptance, loss, and failure with a happier, more hopeful environment where stories still have happy endings.
